Er Zhi Wan' means 'Two Solstice Pill.' The name "Two Solstice Pill" refers to the time of year when 'Nu Zhen Zi(privet berry)' and 'Mo Han Lian(false daisy)' are gathered. Since the privet fruit matures around the winter solstice at most, the false daisy stem grows most lushly in the summer solstice, respectively.
Nu Zhen Zi, privet berry(Ligustri Fructus) symbolizes a chaste woman (女貞) in Chinese. It is an evergreen tree that stays green in winter. In the Bencao Gangmu, it is written, Nu Zhen Zi stays green through the cold winter like chaste women. The black berries of privet tonify the Yin of Liver and Kidney.
Mo Han Lian, False daisy(Eclipta prostrata) is a herbaceous plant that grows lushly in summer. When the stems and leaves are crushed, a black sap is released, which becomes more abundant during the summer season. This black juice is often applied directly to the skin and hair for dying. As a result, it is said that eating 'false daisy juice' will turn your hair black. Er Zhi Wan is also used for early grey hair.
According to legend, there was a famous doctor named Wang Rujia(汪汝佳) in Anhui(安徽省) at the end of the Ming Dynasty. He was weak from childhood, and although he grew thin, he had an exceptional memory, being able to recite and remember a hundred poems(詩經), and was loved by his father. Unfortunately, his father died of an incurable illness, leaving the testament.
"If you cannot be a minister, become a good doctor.不爲良相,且爲良醫。"
Wang Rujia then gave up studying Confucianism and focused on studying medicine. After a few years, Wang Rujia became a renowned local doctor. However, due to his long years of hard study and congenital deficiencies, he began to experience physical ailments such as premature graying of hair, dizziness, back pain, and weakness before the age of 40.
Wang Rujia was collecting herbs in a deep mountain and met 100 years old monk with excellent health. Wang Rujia sought advice from the monk on how to maintain his health. The old monk pointed to a tall privet tree in the courtyard and said, "Just take the seed of privet." Dr. Wang researched privet to enhance its curative effect. He combined privet with False daisy, made juice out of the False daisy, boiled it to a paste, stirred it with privet seed powder, and made pills. He took that pill for half a month, found the effect very good, and continued taking it. After half a year, he regained his health and appeared more energetic. And he named this pill as Er Zhi Wan.
A few years later, Wang Rujia visited his friend Wang Aang(汪昂) in his hometown of Lishui, Zhejiang Province. Wang Aang was surprised to see that Wang Rujia was not sick and looked glowing. Wang Rujia told him the truth.
Wang Aang's family was wealthy and had been living leisurely for a long time. Wang Aang was at risk of liver and kidney deficiency due to his indulgence in alcohol and sex. Wang Aang also took that pill, regained his health, and decided to hire Wang Rujia with a generous salary to write a book about medicine. In four years, Wang Rujia wrote four books under Wang Aang's name in 1682, titled "Medical Prescriptions Collection of Explanation《醫方集解》." Er Zhi Wan is introduced in this book got famous.
